Three Reasons Why You Need To Perfect This ONE Pickleball Shot

It is, simply, one of the most important shots to master in your journey towards pickleball excellence – the return of serve.

Here are three reasons why you should spend time developing a return of serve that is consistently hit deep.

1. Positional Advantage:

  • Executing a deep return effectively keeps your opponents positioned toward the back of the court. This limits their offensive opportunities and prevents them from gaining control of the net.
  • When you return the ball deep, your opponents are forced to play from a defensive position, which can disrupt their rhythm and strategy.

2. Third Shot Difficulty:

  • A deep return makes it harder for the serving team to execute an aggressive third shot. By pushing them back, you reduce the likelihood of them making a short, attacking shot.
  • Ideally, you want to force your opponents into a defensive third shot, giving you and your partner an advantage as you move forward to the net.

3. Time and Pressure:

  • A deep return buys you time. The longer the ball takes to reach the serving team, the more time you have to transition to the net.
  • Additionally, a well-placed deep return puts pressure on the serving team. They must react quickly and adjust their positioning, potentially leading to mistakes.

Balancing Depth and Control

Remember that depth alone isn’t enough. The speed and trajectory of the return matter too.

Hitting the ball high and soft, in addition to deep, can create even more time for you to get to the net.

So, strive for that sweet spot where depth meets control.

A deep return of serve is setting the stage for a successful point.

It keeps your opponents at bay, disrupts their plans, and sets you up for a strong follow-up shot.
